When it’s a warm summer day in Pocatello, nothing feels worse than registering your home comfort system isn’t performing the way it is meant to. The last thing you should have to do is request air conditioner service. But your HVAC is an incredibly intricate system, so it can be difficult to discern what’s driving the problem all alone.
That’s why Vogts Heating & Air wrote this informational guide to help you see what could be taking place with your home comfort system. From here, you’ll see some everyday explanations for why your home is feeling a little too warm. And though a couple of these are fairly painless DIY projects, you might want to call in a pro for cooling system repair.
And if need help, Vogts Heating & Air is here for you. Here are five reasons why your air conditioner may not be cooling your home in Pocatello.
1. Your System Settings Are Off
Every household adjusts their thermostat a little differently to match their individual needs. Still, a lot of families make the error of setting their system to “On” instead of “Auto.” Under this setting, the fan in your system will continue to push out air even after you’ve attained your set temperature.
This can seem like your AC is releasing untreated air, when actually it’s only employing the fan on a more regular basis than needed. Change this setting and determine if things are different.
2. Your System Needs a Good Cleaning
There are two principal areas to investigate for dirt or dust collection when your AC doesn’t feel like it is performing correctly.
First off, inspect your system’s filter. If you don’t replace your filter often enough, accumulated dirt can make it more challenging for air to travel through and cool your rooms. If your filter is clearly dirty or dusty, it’s likely time for a substitute. (And in general, you have to change it about once every three months at a minimum.)
If your filter appears good, move to your outdoor unit. Make sure there’s adequate clearing around it and clear away plants or dirt stuck there. This piece of your cooling system discharges the heat from your home. If the coils outside are clogged, you won’t be comfortable in your home.
We suggest booking professional air conditioner maintenance each year to keep your unit operating like it should and to keep your warranty valid.
3. Your Unit is Losing Refrigerant
Refrigerant is the material that cools the air in your house. It moves between your inside and outdoor system elements to grab and let off heat, to help your house stay cool. If there is a crack along that system, you won’t be feeling cool again until you schedule professional air conditioning repair.
Signals of a refrigerant leak include a decrease in conditioned air, higher energy expenses, frozen evaporator coils and odd hissing noises coming from your AC.
If you think refrigerant may be leaking, call Vogts Heating & Air for system repair as soon as possible. Refrigerant can also be harmful to your family’s health.
4. One or More Pieces Should Be Replaced
Your cooling system contains a couple crucial pieces. These include the blower, evaporator coils, compressor, fan, condenser coils and expansion valve. If any part is not working as it should, your home comfort will suffer.
Our Vogts Heating & Air technicians are trained and knowledged in HVAC. They can help you figure out and fix any issue.
5. Your System Has to Be Upgraded
If your air conditioner is more than 10 years old, it might be time to research new air conditioner installation. As your system puts on the years, it sadly won’t operate as well as it has in the past. And it may be making your home uncomfortable.
If your AC is newer but still isn’t cooling things off, it could be the wrong size for your house. Air conditioners are not all the same size. A cooling system that’s not powerful enough absolutely can’t chill a place the way an appropriately sized HVAC can.
